Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the Kármán line of space.
The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
